Is there a 360 QR that you pull to release?

Postby PMCD » Sat May 19, 2012 7:04 pm

The 360 degree Quick Releases that I have seen release by pushing away.

Does anyone know of a 360 degree QR that releases by pulling towards the rider?

Didn't everyone stop using pull releases because they activate accidentally when unhooking?

F-One. Still has the loop velcro thingy you pull to release, go to their website.

(on edit..) Ahh I see your other post. Not sure if it is actually 360 spinnable, I was just thinking pull release.

Epic had a spinnable pull release...I dought you could find one that is still spinnable or pullable though. They constucted them out of chromed metal so they pretty much all rusted through.

Your welcome.

Paul,

For me the advantages of a Push release far outweigh that of a Pull type... the main one being that you can throw a Hindenburging kite to its safety, while there is zero tension on the powerline. I have had 2 kites rip in two, as a gust hit the kites just before they crashed down into the water, just because I was too slow to realize the situation, and react by hitting the safety. I also had a dog get its "S" hook on the collar caught on a kite line at the Sandbar, and just as the downed kite started to hot launch, I (and the dog) were very happy when I could quickly push away on the release, and throw the kite to its safety... in both of those situations, as Jack Aubrey would say..."there was not a moment to be lost"... and the push away release allowed me to jettison the kite much faster than I could have, while dealing with the "slack" in the powerline, and somehow grabbing the powerline with my other hand, in order to get enough resistance to "pull-it-off". I think that both Jack Aubrey and Steven Maturin would have used a push away release, when dealing with pirates, or the horror of the leeward shore...and you can't go wrong following their example...just ask BBQ Jim! (Ha,ha...Patrick O'Brian-in-joke... sorry)

However, to help answer your question, here are pictures of 2 ways that I think could satisfy your requirement.

The first way, would be to reverse the Cabrinha Mushroom release, so that it would function as a "PULL" release, as shown in the pictures. They made the release from 2005 until 2011. The second way would be to place the "2 ball ended shaft" through the shackle's "finger-trigger-release" hole, shown in the picture. Any of the oldtimers can show you what that would look like, as a lot of people that started kiting around 2000 graduated to using "the shackle", and modifying it with the 2 ball handle, where one ball stuck out each side of the release hole.

Oh, by the way, if you use the mushroom release, shown in the pictures, and you hook it onto a "ring"...make damn sure that the ring is just the right size and thickness, so that the little "arms" that stick out to the side of the release lever...DO NOT SLIP THROUGH THE RING...really work the ring and lever, every which way, to make sure of this!! If the arm or arms slip through the ring, it will not release... you have been warned! I think that this particular release was the best one over invented, but it was not intended for a ring... and I think that it is too bad that they don'e make that simple and effective mushroom release anymore.

I think that both of these suggestions could satisfy the 360 degree requirement, if by that, you mean that the release handle is accessible from all directions.

thx for the info Tom.

I should have explained my motives. I want to look at pull releases because i wanted to turn it around and make it a push release attached to a spreader bar instead of the control bar. I needed some examples to help figure out how I could do this with a minimum of re-engineering. I am trying to follow the KISS principle while avoiding the going the snap hook route for now. Eventually this will come together,

I am hoping I can meet up with you this summer in HR and take a look at your bar set up in mid Aug. I will be staying in HR for 9 days with my family.
