MAGNUSSON PARK LAUNCH UPDATE

General discussions about kiting in the Pacific Northwest - Seattle, Tacoma, Bellingham, the Puget Sound, and places nearby such as the Gorge, the Coast, and BC

BOD, thanks for posting the response from Christopher Williams, Acting Superintendent of the Seattle Parks and Recreation department.

It's good to see the involvement from kiteboarding enthusiasts of PSKite (alluded to in the email list of responders), and to know that Puget Sound Kiteboarding Association is a recognized community constituent by the statement that, "Seattle Parks and Recreation is committed to ensuring that any future planting projects do not hinder access to the longstanding launch area."

The saying that 'actions speak louder than words' is of importance, such that vigilance by the kiteboarding community continues so that encroachment does not happen again.

Thanks to the almost 40 people from our community that contacted the Parks Department. Your voice was heard loud and clear! We'll stay on top of it and keep everyone posted.

Thanks again to everyone who wrote to the Parks Dept. I've met with them an number of times in the past few weeks. We are a recognized user group in the Park and they want to work with us. As with any bureaucracy, things take time so we all have to be patient but we have made some progress:

1. The big pile of bark that was dumped in our launch is gone.
2. The grass cut line has been extended approximately 50 ft. to the South, so we now don't have to dodge the blackberry bushes.
3. They have a landscape architect looking at the design of the entire South Meadow for all park users including kite boarders. My focus will be on removing new plants that will grow to become a problem for us in a few years.
4. The beach erosion issue is still unresolved but I will continue to work with them.

I think it is also important too point out that myopic self-congratulatory tree hugging will never be an Olympic sport.
