Race board and fin talk

Postby Sick Nick » Wed Apr 04, 2012 9:40 am

Let's hear what all of you PS Kiters are riding around on. Summer's only 2-4 months away, so time to start dusting off the raceboard.

I'm working on finishing the 2nd generation Home-Racer, which will be a gaping 70cm compared to the 56cm board I was riding last year. I only have one fin set, Stringy and BBQ's "elliptical" design with 36cm sides and 32cm rear.

From what I hear, I will need bigger fins in the 40-44cm range to make the most of my wider board....Let me know if anyone has a set of larger fins I can test.

What is your dialed setup for this summer?

hey nick obviously you know what I have since you've ridden it already.
once I can, I'll be trying to beat nick by using my 2011 Aguera 69 race board setup with tri-fin ristafin daggers and nsi racer footstraps.
my goal for the summer will be to tack a race board. harder than it looks, I need to learn this on my strapless surfboard first.
as for kites, I'll be using the parks so not sure how competitive they will be compared to race specific kites.

Definitely learn your tacks on a surfboard. Much easier, but also much different. Once you have the feel for it on a surfboard, though, you will have a much easier time figuring it out on a raceboard.

Also, Stringy, When I rode your board I used my 36cm fins. It seemed very squirrely, do your bigger fins stabilize the ride significantly?

yes they will. Paolo Rista has ridden this exact board and has set me up with the best fins for this specific race board.
he's kind of like having a personal shopper for kite gear.

Nick, get some of these fins, then leave those other ones attached to that other, smaller board you are never going to use again.

I bought a demo Airush Sector 60 last fall and finally got it out this past weekend at Jetty. It was alot of fun to ride. Great upwind and screaming down wind rides. I'm amazed by the distance that you can cover. In some ways it reminds me of riding a windsurfer. My only criticism is that the foot straps need to be moved outboard (towards the rail) for pointing upwind.

Jim,

I'm wishing my Sector 60 had the double back strap like the new V3s. I've been riding mine a lot lately, lots of marginal days that it has saved. I've found that the sweet spot between speed and pointing upwind seems to be with a slight windward heel so that the edge is slightly engaging, probably due to the cant of the fins. It will go faster flat but doesn't have the upwind angle, but some of that may be my technique. Did you ever get another set of fins made up with less cant that you were talking about experimenting with?

I've found myself a lot further out than I realized on some tacks due to the speed, which is less than ideal when it is getting light.... All and all a really fun and fast board that has saved at least 4 sessions when it went light or the current cranked up. We'll see how the Jetty Jam races go.....especially if I can figure out the tack by then.
