Replacing the neck gasket on a drysuit

Postby Salmonslayer » Mon Dec 07, 2009 2:37 pm

I am changing the neck gasket on my OR Pyrolite dry suit and find the instructions from OR to be inadequate. It is as if OR never tested the clarity of their instructions on first time users.

What object do you use to put inside the neck of the suit so the neck holds its shape while you glue the neck gasket to it?

A traffic cone was one suggestion. I suppose I could buy one somewhere, because, I am not into taking one from a road crew.

Any other suggestions for a household object I could use??

BTW... I have found a tapered champagne bottle to be ideal for the sleeve gasket. Instead of using a roller to make sure there is a good seal you can hold onto the neck of the bottle while heating the sleeve gasket and roll it against a hard surface.

I'm trying to race around my house in my mind, mentally looking for things that might work. Kinda amusing.

Football? Soccer ball? Kitchen funnel? PVC pipe reducer? Perfectly sized flower pot?

I give up. Can't think of any more.

A 1 gal paint can and a #5 soccer ball are too small. If it is cylindrical like a paint can it needs to be the perfect diameter. The ideal shape would taper like a cone.

I will probably take the suit to Home depot and walk around until I find an answer.

google for the info to install new gaskets on a white water kayaking drytop. It's the same process, but is probably better documented because they have been used longer for that sport.

Stop by a wine shop and get one of those really big bottles of wine.

If you brew your own beer, a carboy would work for sure.
If you don't brew your own beer, you should.

I used a lamp shade. Go to Goodwill and look around.

We use a kids kick ball.. it can be inserted, then pumped up, and deflated when done.

I've always used the top of a SCUBA tank.
