(FIXED) Idea: Calendar RSS feed

Postby Loki » Tue Jan 12, 2010 9:58 am

I need to add this here before I forget I want to implement it! Totally forgot about it until just now.

I would add a iCal icon and a Google calendar icon below the calendar and next to the events at the bottom of the main page so that you can subscribe to the calendar.

It will be picked up by iCal like the following link is picked up on a mac (I assume - I don't use a mac):
webcal://adventurers.meetup.com/100/cal ... rs+Meetup/

And by Google, just how the following link is picked up by Google:
http://www.google.com/calendar/render?c ... rs+Meetup/

Then you'd access it just like any normal calendar event. New events, updates, headcounts, rsvps, etc, would show up in iCal or google calendar automagically. This is because when someone looks at their google calendar, google sees an external calendar. Google would then go out and hit our server for the newest calendar updates, and serve them to whatever the user is using (mobile phone, browser) to view the google calendar.

Also, this:
Reminders from all your calendars
You can now receive email or mobile text-message reminders for all your personal calendars. You can also set different types of reminders for each of your events. Google Calendar can notify you of upcoming events, new, changed and cancelled invitations, invitation replies or it can send you a daily agenda every morning. You do not have to worry about missing a thing.

How's that coming along?

Also, would it be bi-directional? Meaning when I update the google calendar of kiting events in my calendar, will it post it in the PSKite calendar?

One more thing: what's the Watch This Calendar feature in the bottom left of the calendar?

I've been lazy and haven't worked on it yet. ;)

Not bi-directional. It'd be a read-only calendar, as otherwise I'd have to let your calendar program make changes to the board. That's probably asking for trouble.

The calendar watch link subscribes you to the calendar. If new events are added (maybe even changed?) you'll get an email notification. At least I think that's what's supposed to happen. I haven't tested it.

Yeah, a wrong button and community knows when Daniel is picking up his kids from soccer practice.

Read only.

Done. Took me forever to figure out that google calendar doesn't update immediately. It takes 24 hours for a "guaranteed" refresh. Lame.

You should see icons on the main page in the "upcoming events" box and on the calendar itself.
