PWC buoys at Jetty

PWC buoys at Jetty

Postby Sark » Fri Jun 25, 2010 8:32 am

Just a heads up for any newbs like me, watch out for the PWC buoys at Jetty. They can be easy to miss when its a bit wavy. The one I found yesterday had a spring gate shackle on the buoy end that grabbed my lines very easily when I crashed my kite and they met. It was very tough to get off in the wind, luckily someone saw me struggling to get it free and ran down and grabbed my kite to give me some slack so I could unsnap the shackle. If he hadn't come along I was going to flag my kite to get the tension off, glad I didn't have to. I didn't feel in danger, but it was defintly a pain and probably would have taken me 4 times as long to get clear without help. Thanks again to the guy that gave a hand, once again I'm impressed by the community/willingness to help/good vibes of the kiteboarding crew.

This brings up memories of surfers getting caught in crab pot bouy lines and drowning.

It would probably be prudent to replaces the shackle with a locking gate shackle.

OR

Slipping a small section of hose onto the gate and sliding it over the end of the gate when it is closed works too. It is a $1 solution to a problem that could become dangerous.

PWC = personal watercraft. The kite schools tie the jetskis to them to keep them from getting beached (try moving a beached jetski sometime.) Where you see the jetskis floating is where they're located.

Exactly, they are down where the schools are. Usually the ski's are tied to them and are easy to see, but when the ski isn't on and its kinda wavy they can be missed. Granted it was like my 3rd day, and I was pretty fixated on the kite etc...Again didn't feel unsafe as the water is like waist deep, but just thought other newbs might want a heads up.

I just try and jib those PWC, that is why they are there right? Extra points for breaking some of the plastic parts and riding away clean... Worst case, whenever I ride by one I spray it real good just to show it who is boss.
