RED TIDE at SPI

Nasty aerosol that causes burning eyes and coughing ... people are clearing out of town, and kiting activity is down to about zero, even though winds have been OK for light wind. Good winds would make the red tide irritation worse.

what a bummer!
have you considered going up to corpus christi?
no red tide there. it's about three hours north with a handful of different riding spots.

Next time I will check about Red Tide before going. Corpus Christi does look OK, so it would have been a better choice. Lesson learned: Always check for Red Tide before going to SPI!

SPI can also be too cold and otherwise screwed up from about Dec 15 to Feb 15, with Seattle sometimes being warmer. Then it is wiped out with Spring Breakers during March and April. So, that narrows down the OK window to May-June, Nov. 15 to Dec 15, and Feb. 15 to March 1. See you at DB!

We had the same experience last year in early October. We all ended up cutting the trip short and bailing after a few days due to coughing and general lack of wind. Nasty place, I'll never go back there.
