New to jetty island

Postby crawdaddy » Mon Sep 05, 2016 11:33 pm

I've never kited jetty island, but my wife will be out of town this coming weekend and I am thinking about heading up.
What is the setup?
What conditions do I look for?
Do I need to bring my small boat?
Any good hotels in the immediate area?
Any other advice would be great.
Thanks

I just looked at NOAA and they are calling for 5-15 from the north in Puget Sound/Hood Canal on Sunday. Have never done Jetty on a southerly. Not bad but the temp. in Everett isn't as high as I would like for a thermal push, only 66. I like to see wind from the north with a temp. in the 70's so Sunday may be a 50/50 chance I would say and probably later in the afternoon at that. Maybe someone else has a better call. I also like windria.net/Everett to make a call. Yes, you need a small watercraft, boat, inflatable kayak, canoe... to get across from the Marina. Not far, maybe a football field length of water but something that floats. Too large a boat and they ding you for a boat launch. Don't forget your life preserver. Most paddle to a spot just north of the Jetty Island dock. Many hotels in Everett area, no real recommendations there. We have taken our RV and spend the night at the Tulalip Casino parking lot for free.
I agree- I would like to see more activity on the forum.

I'm probably going to somewhere on the Columbia river. Jones, or east to Hood.

Probably good call. Weather may be better down south. Still- the Jetty is amazing as a kite beach and kite community. Shoot for a little earlier in the summer. Want to do Damon soon with the RV, will get in touch for a local weather update from you. Is the Marina still functioning as an RV overnight site?

I believe so. In the summer I am usually in Westport. Winter is when I go to the north side of the harbor. This year I would like to take my skiff to sand island just a little northeast of Damon pt. There's a nice sw facing beach that looks like fun. I hiked around the island exploring there once, but haven't kited there yet.

weather situation resulted in Jetty setup looking pretty good today Sat 9/10. Tougher to call in advance this time of year. But Westport looks good as well. The old saying applies ...never leave wind to get wind!
