Lost GoPro at Jetty 7/24/10

Postby MarkTron » Tue Jul 27, 2010 11:20 am

Well I learned the hard way not to trust the GoPro mounted on the board. Came down from a moderate jump and the plastic piece that snaps into the adhesive board mount snapped in half.

It happened just before the races began and I was about 150' north of the boat anchored. See pic. On a low tide I think it would wash up.

So, if anyone comes across it let me know and there will surely be a half rack of fine ale in exchange!

get that trust back.
check out the new fin mount I designed.
This GoPro mount is mechanically attached via your (2) fin bolts.
there are radial slots that give you a little adjustment.
I don't think this mount will fail.
I made it to withstand just about any abuse.

Stringy, that new mount looks brilliant. I was just telling Eric that I didn't want to try mounting his camera on my board for fear of losing it. Now what you need to do is go out with a board mounted camera, line mounted camera, and strut mounted camera all at once...with someone filming from the shore!

With that many cameras, you'll be able to start making realtime 3D models of yourself kiteboarding.

Stringy...

speaking from experience I don't think board mounting the gopro is a good idea period.

I have broken a surf hero base plate. and also had twice now the the actual clear plastic portion of the camera housing snap off right where the screw is attaches it to the mount. luckily both times I had the camera secured with a teather and it didn't actually break the waterproof seal so I was able to recover the camera.

there must be some insane geforces going on in the tips of these boards with all the flex on landings. I think it would be really interesting to see if its possible to mount a shadowbox near a board tip or fin mount to the board to get some readings on how high the forces actually get.

I'll agree with the concerns on forces when a board impacts water. I made the fin mount so it would not fail. the problem is something will inevitably fail. most likely the housing. my next solution is the wrap. this is an earlier prototype that encompasses the housing, preventing accidental opening of the latch, as well as a secondary attachment to the mount via another screw through the base of the wrap. btw I have lost a gopro before using the stock board mount.

Mark: I'd really like to see that video of the wipeout/sinking camera.

Stringy: That homemade mount is very cool. I'd really like to know how you made it? I mean did you somehow carve it out of plastic stock, or did you create a mold and cast it out of some sort of plastic resin or what? I've always wanted to manufacture my own various plastic parts, but never found an efficient way to do it.

As far as making it witstand even more g-forces, I think that bracing/seating would definetly be the way to go. Although it would limit the angle. But imagine if you made a "seat" for the camera to support each side, then the g-forces would be diffused among the entire case, rather than all the strain going on the screw mount. Same thing if you made sort of a "backrest" for the camera.
